- Palm Beach County Coring
Athena completed multiple borrow area evaluations offshore of Palm Beach County for a geotechnical evaluation for beach nourishment efforts. Athena provided coring and geological reporting services.
- Offshore Florida Vibracoring
Our 77-foot research vessel, Thunderforce, completed projects offshore of Naval Station Mayport and Duval County for borrow area evaluations for beach nourishment efforts as well as vibracores along the Tampa Navigation Channel for a geotechnical evaluation of sediments located there. A total of 231 vibracores were collected across the 3 project areas.
In the News at Athena...
- Detroit River Remedial Investigation
Athena spent April and May collecting vibracore samples at 180 stations along the Detroit River from downtown Detroit south to Lake Erie. The cores were collected as part of a remedial investigation to classify sediments in the area. Athena also designed and built 28 sediment traps to study the nature of suspened sediment in the the river. We were able to complete the challenging project despite unseasonable bad weather and while dodging hundreds of Walleye fishermen!
- Jacksonville Harbor Section 103
Athena utilized both RV Artemis and RV Recovery to rapidly complete a Section 103 sediment sampling project along the Jacksonville Navigation Channel from downtown Jacksonville to Blount Island. This also included additional samples to aid JAXPort's efforts to expand the Blount Island Terminal. The environmental portion of the project included a mix of surface grab samples and vibracores at 84 locations with an additional 40 vibracores collected for geotechnical analysis.
- Gary, Indiana Vibracoring
Athena spent the month of June colelcting vibracores in the Grand Calumet River near Gary, Indiana. This required multiple sampling platforms and methods to collect vibracores in different aquatic settings. This included the use of our twin Jon-Boat platform, dubbed "Frankenstein", in some difficult to access lagoons. We also brought the 24-foot "Good Vibrations" for sampling within the Grand Calumet River. With this vessel, we were able to collect several hundred vibracores and surface grab samples during the project duration.
- More Summer Fun with Vibracoring
The summer of 2024 has been a flurry of activity, with Athena collecting samples throughout the country with notable projects offshore in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, plus notable projects in Indiana, North Carolina, and Kentucky.
We have the talent and equipment to operate just about anywhere.

- Staying Busy with Vibracore Collection
Athena has kicked off 2024 with a busy slate of projects that included 3 projects in Florida, offshore projects in South and North Carolina, work for the Navy in South Carolina, and a successfule run to Puerto Rico to support a harbor improvement program there.
These projects included the use of all of our sampling vessels, including Thunderforce offshore in the Carolinas, and shipping our 24 foot vessel to San Juan to collect cores there.
