Dr. Sexton is a coastal geologist/sedimentologist with thirty-nine years of broad based professional experience. His areas of expertise include marine sedimentation, pre-dredge environmental and geotechnical studies, modern stratigraphic studies, groundwater pollution, geomorphology, mineral exploration, shoreline erosion/nourishment, oil spill response and contingency planning, and coastal mapping studies. Dr. Sexton has extensive experience studying marine sedimentation and performing pre-dredge environmental studies. His groundwater pollution experience includes studies on metal contamination, PCB’s, creosote, hydrocarbons and radionuclides. He has performed research and managed projects on oil spill mapping and assessment, three-dimensional geologic modeling of modern sediments, and sand source evaluation for beach renourishment. He has also conducted numerous mineral surveys to evaluate sand and gravel, coquina, heavy minerals, limestone, and peat resources. Dr. Sexton has extensive experience in teaching continuing educational training seminars, leading or co-leading over two-hundred twenty five one-week courses in the geological modeling of depositional systems taught along the South Carolina, North Carolina, and Alaska coasts for geoscientists from both industry and academia. Dr. Sexton has conducted research in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Central America, the Caribbean, Canada, and throughout the United States including Alaska and the Hawaiian Islands.
In 1987, Dr. Sexton founded Athena Technologies, Inc., a geological consulting firm that specializes in aquatic and marine stratigraphic, geotechnical, and environmental research and provides advanced modern geological training for industry and academia. He is currently the President and senior scientist.
